The idea and intention behind the Soul Defender brand is to preserve, revalue and uphold the essence of surfing by restoring the peace, harmony and the energy that surrounds it.
Mother nature shows us how small we are and teaches us humility and respect for the ocean, a value not seen among many surfers today. There is a new breed of selfish surfer out there, those who are more concerned with the number of waves they can catch as opposed to sharing the line up. Aggression is often the result which upsets the balance we seek in surfing as in life generally. For me, out in the surf it means avoiding aggressive surfers, infecting us with their negativity. We just need to find a way to filter out such toxic behaviour.
Soul Defender is about appreciating the solitude we experience in the waves which is a great time to reflect. We can find answers to problems or difficult situations while patiently waiting for the next set to arrive. It’s also a good time to gain the positive effects of the negative ions present in moving water that affect out moods. Have you ever wondered why you feel so good just being out in the surf? I believe it’s the soul rewarding us.
Thoughts of surfing perfect waves are deeply ingrained in every surfer’s psyche but sitting out on our boards could also be a time to delve deeper into our souls. Maybe we’ll discover new meaning and purpose in our lives and a simpler and more natural way of living. The hippie generation appeared to have been on the right track decades ago, but unfortunately many lost themselves through their over-indulgence in drugs.
Our physical, mental and spiritual well-being can be enhanced by surfing, or what I like to describe as ‘defending our soul’, but the soul can be energised in so many other areas which is what this brand is all about. By treating our body and soul with love and respect, we feel more positive about ourselves. One healthy habit has a knock-on effect making us all better surfers. For example, a healthy mind set leads to healthier food intake which leads to motivation and regular exercise, which leads to confidence which leads to surfing longer and stronger sessions.
Defending the soul is at the heart of our strategy. It involves creating a range of products that only use natural materials: wool, cotton, hemp, wood, metal and leather. Now is the time to stimulate Australian manufacturing by employing local businesses, craftsmen and women, it’s time to give China the big ‘heave ho’ and say no to mass production. Well-made products add value by lasting longer. For example, see the R.M. Williams model.
Soul Defender has a wide range of natural products that blend seamlessly into the surfing culture, enhancing a certain level of spirituality, making us feel good about ourselves while nourishing the soul.
