Plant-A-Shade

PLANT-A-SHADE umbrellas

PLANT-A-SHADEs are umbrellas in various sizes made of biodegradable material, designed for your outdoor plants—both in the garden and pot—protecting them from over exposure to the sun, dehydration and hardening soils during the hot summer months.

In general, most of us don’t have the patience for plants and are looking for instant results. I sometimes think we expect plants to grow before our very eyes, like time-lapse photography. Also, while we usually have good intentions when we purchase a plant, most of us don’t have green thumbs. How often do we go to a nursery and make an impulse purchase, usually choosing aesthetics over practicality? Then several weeks later, because we either haven’t read the little cards attached to each plant—which are just guides rather than detailed instructions for care—or have casually thrown them away, our plants are showing evidence of heat stress: wilting, fading, changing colour and dying. And we are back at the nursery—those money traps—replacing them, perpetuating the expensive cycle. So we need all the help we can get.

Do you know that 80-90% of plants are made of water and lose moisture through their leaves (transpiration). Long exposure to the sun, especially the heat of the afternoon can have a devastating effect especially on those plants that are not adapted to temperatures above 30 degrees celcius. The answer, however, is not to add more water without understanding your plants specific needs, otherwise you could be adversely affecting their delicate root systems, by drowning them, starving their roots of oxygen and leading to death.

So, once again your plants need all the help they can get, especially the much needed shade in summer afternoons.

PLANT-A-SHADE provides not only effortless maintenance, can contribute to water conservation—especially in a country like Australia that often has water restrictions—and has unique design features.
